I was at a conference full of people but I couldn't speak the language and I was trying to communicate with people next to me but was unable to as they couldn't understand me and I couldn't understand them. So I decided to leave to go back to where I was staying. My accommodation was a 3 room apartment old fashioned in the 70's style. I felt I had to lock the doors because I didn't feel safe. There was 2 glass sliding doors I had to lock. One I locked easily but the other door was harder to lock because of the door latch. The door wouldn't lock and it kept opening and I was afraid someone was coming and I was trying to lock the sliding door in a hurry. Eventually it locked as I had to pull the door up to attach the latch but I felt it wasn't a strong lock. Then I checked the apartment rooms for intruders under the bed and behind doors turning on all the lights in the apartment and rooms. There was noone there and that is all I can remember.
This dream contains several powerful symbols and themes that suggest a variety of personal emotions and experiences. Let’s break it down step by step.
Conference and Language Barrier: The conference setting signifies a social or professional gathering, indicating your desire for engagement or communication with others. However, the language barrier represents feelings of isolation or inability to connect with people in your life. This may reflect a situation in your waking life where you feel misunderstood or where your voice isn’t being heard. You might be struggling to express yourself clearly, or it could indicate feelings of anxiety related to social situations, especially where expectations differ from your own experiences.
Leaving for Your Accommodation: Choosing to leave the conference setting could imply a desire to retreat, to find safety and familiarity in a more controlled environment. This is indicative of a need for security and comfort amidst overwhelming social situations. The act of returning to your accommodation also suggests that you value your personal space and may seek solitude when feeling challenged by external circumstances.
The 70’s Style Apartment: The specific detail of an old-fashioned apartment illustrates a connection to the past or nostalgia. It may suggest that you are reflecting on your personal history, or perhaps feel anchored by past experiences that are influencing your current feelings. The decor and nature of an older apartment might also symbolize a sense of being out of sync with modern realities or feeling stuck in your current situation.
Locking the Doors: This act conveys a strong sense of vulnerability and fear, revealing your instinct to protect yourself. The need to lock the doors suggests a preoccupation with safety and a desire to secure your personal space. It could also indicate a fear of external influences or judgments, showing that you may be feeling threatened by something or someone in your life, whether it be a situation, an internal fear, or a personal relationship.
Struggling with the Lock: The difficulty you faced while trying to lock the second sliding door relates to obstacles you may be experiencing in asserting your boundaries or feeling secure in your life. The fact that it ultimately locked—despite the struggle—can reflect resilience and the determination to protect your space, even if the means of doing so feels inadequate or flimsy.
Searching for Intruders: The thorough check of your apartment signifies anxiety or a feeling that something is amiss in your life. The action of searching for intruders can represent deep-seated fears, possibly about being judged, hurt, or having your vulnerabilities exposed. It shows a need to confront these anxieties and ensure that you feel safe both emotionally and physically.
Turning on All the Lights: This imagery symbolizes the desire for clarity and understanding in your life. Light often represents enlightenment, so turning on all the lights can indicate your efforts to understand your fears or dilemmas fully. You might be searching for truth or reassurance amidst confusion or uncertainty.
Overall, your dream suggests a profound sense of seeking safety, clarity, and connection in a world that feels overwhelming and occasionally isolating. It reflects your struggles with communication and self-expression, as well as a desire to protect yourself from perceived threats. As you navigate these feelings in your waking life, consider ways to enhance your sense of security, build connections that nurture understanding, and express your thoughts and concerns more freely.
